CONFESSING MOVEMENT
Organized at an Atlanta meeting in April 1994; second meeting held in April 1995. Convened by retired Bishop William R. Cannon, Atlanta; the Rev. Maxie Dunnam, president of Asbury Theological Seminary, Wilmore, Ky.; and the Rev. Thomas C. Oden, a faculty member at Drew University, Madison, N.J. Addressing what they called a "theological crisis," the group endorsed a strongly-worded "confessional statement" calling on the denomination to reclaim and ignite its doctrinal heritage. In addition to calling for orthodoxy in theological matters, the document condemns homosexuality and abortion, and decries experiementation "with pagan ritual and practice." Endorsement has been sought by the group in advance of the 1996 General Conference.
