DENVER (UMNS) -- Eight people who have academic and administrative responsibilities at United Methodist-related colleges and universities were elected to the denomination's University Senate here April 25 for the 1997-2000 quadrennium by the 1996 General Conference.

The University Senate is an elected body of higher education professionals that reviews and recommends schools for United Methodist relationships.

Four of the eight people were appointed by the Council of Bishops. Two of the four are executive officers of United Methodist-related institutions and two hold positions relevant to academic or financial affairs or church relationships. Those appointed were:

* Kevin LaGree, dean, Candler School of Theology, Emory, University, Atlanta;

* Shirley A. R. Lewis, president, Paine College, Augusta, Ga.;

* Robert Edgar, president, School of Theology at Claremont, Claremont, Calif.;

*David L. Beckley, president, Rust College, Holly Springs, Miss.

The General Conference nominated a slate of 12 people to fill four of the positions on the Senate.

The two presidents elected were the Rev. Lovett Weems, St. Paul School of Theology, Kansas City, Mo., and Wanda Bingham, Huntingdon College, Montgomery, Ala.

Elected to fill the academic positions were the Rev. Justo L. Gonzales, adjunct professor, Interdenominational Theological Center, Atlanta and Columbia Theological Seminary, Decatur, Ga.; and Willa Bing-Harris, professor and coordinator for special education at Alabama State University, Montgomery, Ala.
