102. The biblical story is marred by disregarded covenants and disrupted moral order, by sin and rebellion, with the resulting tragedies of alienation, oppression, and disorder. In the gospel of the new covenant, God in Christ has provided a new basis for reconciliation: justification by faith and birth into a new life in the Spirit. This gift, marked by growth toward wholeness of life, is revealed in Christ who came not to be served but to serve (Mark 10:45) and to give his life for the world. Christ freely took the nature of a servant, carrying this servanthood to its utmost limits (Philippians 2:7).
