Understanding Petition Numbers
Regarding ¶ 409.2 of The Book of Discipline,
consideration of the problem of effectiveness of ministers needs to be
addressed. There are ministers that have gone to seminary and completed all the
required educational needs that just sit back and practically do nothing, and
there are ministers that have only completed the basics of the candidacy
program that are more effective as pastors than the seminary graduates ever
dreamed of being. It sometimes seems as if the seminary graduates (ordained
ministers) say to themselves, "I have a guaranteed secure job. I don't need to
work very hard at it." This, as we all know, is the wrong attitude to have. It
hurts the church as a whole at all levels. There needs to be a better method of
judging effectiveness as a minister. By merely completing seminary does not
ensure this. Please prayerfully and diligently consider this problem.
