Understanding Petition Numbers

On page 674, four lines from the bottom of the page, amend as follows:

". . .and faithfully administering,

the Sacraments of Baptism and Holy Communion

with the assistance of deacons appointed to serve with you;"

On page 675, line 19, amend as follows:

"As an expression of your continuing deacon's ordination

You are to love, serve, and pray

for all the people among whom you work,

caring alike for young and old,

strong and weak, rich and poor.

You are to strengthen and support the ministry of all

Christians, working with others to prepare all baptized Christians

for their ministry in the world God loves."

On page 676, line 11, amend as follows:

"In covenant with other elders and deacons,

will you be loyal to The United Methodist Church,

accepting its order, liturgy, doctrine, and discipline,

defending it against all doctrines contrary to God's Holy Word,

and accepting the authority of those who are appointed

to supervise your ministry?"

On page 677, following the pattern set in the changes in the Service of Ordination of Deacons, amend by moving the bishop's prayer to a  position just prior to act of ordination and laying on of hands beginning on Line 17.

The instructions at the bottom of page 677 shall read:

"The following sign act of delivering presenting a Bible may be done immediately following the act of ordination and the laying on of hands.

The bishop shall deliver present to each candidate a Bible, placing both hands of the bishop and the candidate on the Bible and saying:...
