Understanding Petition Numbers
The General Commission on Religion and Race (GCORR)
fulfills a unique and essential role in our Church. It is not primarily a
program agency, but is rather charged "to challenge...The United Methodist
Church to a full and equal participation of the racial and ethnic constituency
in the total life and mission of the Church through advocacy and by reviewing
and monitoring the practices of the entire Church so as to further ensure
racial inclusiveness" (¶ 2102). It serves a monitoring function which
requires that it have a status independent of other agencies.
It is clear that while progress has been made, racism is still a potent force
in the society and the church.
For the above reasons, we urge that all efforts to abolish GCORR or to combine
or merge it with another agency be defeated and that GCORR be affirmed in its
present form and responsibilities.
