7. The Annual Conference may designate a person who is a member in good
standing of one of the local churches and who is a member of the bar
of the state or of one of the states in which the Annual Conference is
located as chancellor. It is preferable that the person named as
chancellor be a member in good standing of one of the local churches in the
Annual Conference. The chancellor may be retained by the Annual Conference and
shall serve as legal advisor and chief counsel to the bishop, the Board of
Trustees, and the Annual Conference. The chancellor, who
shall be nominated by the bishop in consultation with the Board of
Trustees and elected by the next session of the Annual
Conference, shall serve as legal advisor to the bishop and to the
Annual Conference.30
