Whereas, many people in mid-life are faced with the necessity of obtaining the knowledge and skills required for a change in career; and
Whereas, increasingly, older people are facing periods of many years duration when they are not gainfully employed; and
Whereas, the Church is uniquely able to provide the guidance needed to help individuals make choices that will enable them to live satisfying lives of productive activity, basing their decisions on the rewards of service to others rather than merely material gain;
Therefore, be it resolved, that the General Conference urge its laity and clergy, individually and through its commissions, boards, and agencies, to actively promote the idea of the worth of a life of service, whether it is in great matters or small; and
Let it further be resolved, that The United Methodist Church urge everyone, of whatever faith or station in life, to hold in high regard not those who have acquired great wealth but those who have served society.
