History Note
The jurisdictional system within The United Methodist Church was created in 1939 at the formation of the Methodist Church. The primary purpose of the conference is the election of bishops and assignment of bishops. The jurisdiction conference also maintains agencies to coordinate programs in the jurisdiction. Most of these agencies mirror agencies at both the annual conference and the general church level.
Scope Note
This is the collection of the Commission on Archives and History of the Northeastern Jurisdiction of the United Methodist Church. The materials range in date from 1906 to the present, but the majority of the collection was produced during the middle decades of the twentieth century. Only a few items lack sufficient evidence to supply a positive date of production, and they are likely to fall into this date range, as well. There are three broad divisions within the collection: 1) records of the Commission and its proceeding historical societies, 2) records from the quadrennial conferences, and 3) records of organizations within the jurisdiction.
The records of the Commission and historical societies include minutes from meetings, papers delivered at meetings and workshops, financial records, publications and printed materials, and correspondence between various leaders. Additionally, there is a collection of photographs from the 1980s that record Commission leadership and numerous historical landmarks from around the jurisdiction. The bulk dates of the collection range from 1937-1996. The records from the quadrennial conferences include journals, typescript journals and conference proceedings, minutes from various jurisdictional committees, orders of worship including consecration services and texts of Episcopal addresses, and Daily Christian Advocate publications. This collection also contains artifacts such as recordings of the 1980 and 2000 jurisdictional conferences and examples of badges for conference personnel ranging from 1948-1980. The collection dates range from 1939-2000. The final section of this collection consists of materials relating to the United Methodist Women of the Northeastern Jurisdiction and its proceeding organizations, the Board of Education and specifically its Middle Atlantic Convocation, and the Epworth League of the East German Conference. The UMW materials date from 1939-1996 and include Core Planning Group minutes and records, photos, programs and printed materials. The Middle Atlantic Convocation materials date from 1953-1983 and include minutes from planning meetings. The Epworth League materials date from 1906-1942 and consist of materials relating to the Institute at Sea Cliff, Long Island, NY and include minutes, advertisements for events, institute certificates, and a trophy from the New York Area Convention.

Access Restrictions
Denominational
agency journals, reports and committee minutes are open to the public unless they have been
closed in accordance with requirements specified in the Discipline. Denominational agency staff
office records are closed for twenty-five (25) years after creation. Personnel records are
closed for at least 75 years. Appeals can be made to the General Commission on Archives and
History, P. O. Box 127, Madison, NJ 07940.
