Abstract: Cornelia Chillson Moots (1843-1929) was a pioneer Methodist Episcopal Church missionary to the Philippines. This collection contains items related to Cornelia Chillson Moots' missionary work in the Philippines. The largest part of this collection is her diaries from 1900 to 1902 which are handwritten. Photographs, articles, news clippings, and letters are interleaved throughout her writing. Loose clippings are in a separate folder. The remainder of the collection is comprised of correspondence, writings, a class book, a minute book, a periodical, and sheet music.

Biographical Note

Cornelia Chillson Moots (1843-1929) was a pioneer Methodist Episcopal Church missionary to the Philippines. She graduated from Albion College (Michigan) and served as a state evangelist in the Woman's Christian Temperance Union. In 1900 she sailed for the Philippines and began to minister to American soldiers in United States military hospitals in Manila, Dagupan, Calamba, and Corregidor. She also worked on the hospital ship Relief. In addition toministering to the sick and wounded, Moots conducted services and assemblies for patients, organized class meetings and Bible studies, and distributed religious literature. She retired in 1902.


Scope and Content Note

This collection contains items related to Cornelia Chillson Moots' missionary work in the Philippines. The largest part of this collection is her diaries from 1900 to 1902 which are handwritten. Photographs, articles, news clippings, and letters are interleaved throughout her writing. Loose clippings are in a separate folder. The remainder of the collection is comprised of correspondence, writings, a class book, a minute book, a periodical, and sheet music.

The correspondence is dated 1899 to 1923 with the bulk from 1904 to 1906. There is one 1903 letter addressed to Mrs. Carrie C. Faxon from the Civil Governor of the Philippines which discusses a future meeting time. The class book is from the first Methodist Episcopal class organized in the Philippines and is dated 1900- 1901. A minute book from the Woman's Christian Temperance Union of the Philippines is also included. It covers the years 1900 to 1902. A February 1921 copy of The Philippine Observer is the last item in this collection.
