History Note

The United Methodist Gay Caucus was established in 1975 in response to growing activism among the gay and lesbian community. The organizational meeting took place at Wheadon United Methodist Church in Evanston, Illinois in July of 1975, drawing together groups from San Francisco, Kansas City, Texas, Chicago and New York. Members had been particularly stung by the denomination's adopted stance on homosexuality as developed in the Social Principles of the 1972 General Conference. Plans were made to have a presence at the 1976 General Conference in Portland, Oregon. That General Conference continued the policies put in place in 1972.

In the Spring of 1978 the Caucus renamed itself Affirmation: United Methodists for Lesbian/Gay Concerns. In the Fall of that year Affirmation adopted a plan to support two staff people to travel the church until the 1980 General Conference. The first two staff, Peggy Harmon and Michael Collins traveled around the country through those months. Because of their efforts several local Affirmation groups started across the country.

In April of 1979, deaconess Joan Clark was fired by the Women's Division of the Board of Global Ministries after seven years working for the agency because she affirmed her lesbian identity. Clark became a strategic leader and helped catalyze an even greater presence by Affirmation for the church. The 1980 General Conference's continuance of its stance on homosexuality was a severe blow to the organization from which it almost did not recover. It took the next four years to refocus and initiate new programs.

Following the 1984 General Conference reaffirmation of the ban on ordination and appointment of "self-avowed, practicing homosexuals", Affirmation announced the Reconciling Congregations program. This was a new departure for the caucus. Instead of focusing on changing legislation at the denominational level at General Conference the Reconciling Congregations program focused on the local church and more grass roots work. The program had been under development since 1982 by Mark Bowman, D. J. Porter and Perry Wiggins. Beth Richardson and Mark Bowman became facilitators for the Program. In 1985 Richardson and Bowman began a quarterly magazine, Manna for the Journey (later renamed Open Hands), as a resource for the Reconciling Congregations movement. Local congregations and even annual conferences began to participate in the program and identify themselves as reconciling organizations. By 1997 there were 500 Reconciling Congregation Program members. In 1998 the Judicial Council ruled that annual conferences and other official church bodies cannot label themselves as an unofficial body; the ban was extended to local churches in 1999. The caucus continues to be active on behalf of homosexual issues.

Scope Note

The material is an assortment of records collected from various Affirmation leaders over a period of several years. Because of the ad hoc nature of the organization in its early days there is little organizational structure.

The material collected by each individual is reflective of that person's involvement and personal interests. In many ways the material is closer to a group of personal papers than an organization's archives. For this reason, even though organizational series have been identified every effort has been extended to identify, by sub-series designation, the collector or creator of that particular material.

This material can be divided broadly into three major categories. The first category is comprised of various records created by Affirmation members which reflect the administrative and programmatic concerns of the caucus and can be considered properly as the Affirmation archives. There are twelve series in this group. It will be described in more detail in the following paragraphs. The next major set of material are magazines collected by the Affirmation leadership. These magazines either have ads in them about Affirmation activities, or articles by Affirmation members. In a few cases there are articles about Affirmation. The magazines were collected by the leadership, but not arranged into any subject file organization. It is assumed the magazines were kept to demonstrate the range of interests of Affirmation members and supporters. The appropriate articles were photocopied and kept. This comprises series thirteen. The last major set of material (series 14) was compiled by Dr. Kenneth E. Rowe of Drew University. Dr. Rowe collected news articles, press releases and other clippings relating to both Affirmation and gay and lesbian concerns in general. This miscellaneous material has been arranged by date and kept with the Affirmation material because of its close connection with the subject matter. It is not properly part of the Affirmation archives.
