History Note
The Order of Saint Luke (also called The Brotherhood) was founded by Dr. R. P. Marshall and several Methodist clergy in 1946. Originally, the Order was a "fellowship dedicated to the cause of liturgical renewal within The Methodist Church." In 1951, The Order made a final declaration of its mission, which encompassed several goals. According to the charter, The Order of St. Luke is a fellowship of Methodist ministers and seminary students devoted to liturgical and sacramental study and practice. In addition, it wishes to lead in the administration and development of worship and exercise the pastoral office effectively.
Scope Note
The Order of Saint Luke's (OSL) archival records primarily reflect the administration of the Order from both the Abbot's office and related general officers, including those who were chapter heads. Dates of the materials range from 1941 to 2017 with the bulk of the materials being in the late 20th century. Administrative records reflect day by day duties, planning of convocations, meetings, collaboration with other entities such as General Board of Discipleship (Now Discipleship Resources) and other like organizations. Records related to OSL editorial work on their publications are here as well.
There is extensive documentation on rites and liturgies developed for the Order for private and public use. Also one can find research material on the “For All the Saints” publication. Scholars and students interested in the higher liturgical life will find the collection rich in materials committed to the role and use of liturgies as a devotion and renewal for both the individual and the larger church.
The Order is modeled on a monastic hierarchy that includes administrative and sacral offices such as an abbot, prior, chancellor, etc. These offices, however, are not a reflection of The United Methodist ordained clergy structure. Rather, it serves as an administrative and sacral structure only. The Order does not require celibacy as a requirement for membership.
Publications and research papers are worth examining for illumination not only on United Methodist theology, worship and doctrine in a higher liturgical expression but also from other denominations or liturgical groups which the Order drew from to enhance its self-understanding for deeper piety.
The Chapters Series reflects a connectional system based on the current United Methodist Church structure. Each chapter published their own newsletters and printed orders worship. Jurisdictions also had their own chapters as did many United Methodist seminaries. The series is worth investigating for additional liturgical discussions.
Yearly Convocation meetings also include various committees for the overall management and direction for the Order. Here attending members could gather to worship, present papers, discuss issues and accomplish Order business.
The audiovisuals are heavily slanted to the North Central Jurisdiction's work but also contain recordings related to the 1989 United Methodist Hymnal. The video tapes were created as scouting expeditions for a retreat center and community home. Unfortunately, nothing came of this project due to finances.
