Biographical Note

Matthew Simpson (1811-1884), an American bishop, editor, and educator, was born in Cadiz, Ohio, June 2, 1811. He was baptized by Bishop Asbury. Simpson spent two months at Madison College in Pennsylvania, and then returned to Cadiz where he studied medicine. He was then qualified as a practitioner. In 1834 he joined the Pittsburgh Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church and served the Cadiz Circuit, and then in Pittsburgh and Williamsport (now Mononghela), Pennsylvania. In 1837 he became Professor of Natural Science in Allegheny College and in 1839 was elected President of Indiana Asbury University (now Depauw University).

Simpson was a member of the General Conference of 1844 which adopted the Plan of Separation resulting in the formation of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. In 1848, he became editor of the Western Christian Advocate and was elected bishop in 1852. In 1859, he was elected President of Garrett Theological Seminary while still holding the episcopal office. Simpson became a friend and confidant of President Lincoln, which led him to plunge deeply into national politics. He attempted to gain appointments for Methodists to national office and to a degree was successful. When Lincoln was assassinated Simpson was called upon to preach his funeral in Springfield, Illinois. In 1863, Simpson moved to Philadelphia, and from that base he preached and lectured widely in support of the Union cause. When Andrew Johnson assumed the presidency, Simpson supported him because he believed Johnson would be hard on the South. When this was not the case and for other reasons, he readily supported the move to impeach Johnson. Simpson died in 1884 and is buried in Philadelphia.

Scope Note

These valuable letters are copied for the public, but the originals are permanently closed. The correspondence also includes letters from Simpson to his wife, Ellen. Much of the correspondence during the Civil War years pertains to persons writing Simpson because of his personal influence with the President and members of the Cabinet in order to secure a government position or has a son released from a Southern war prison. Most of the post Civil War correspondence center on major church issues for that was important that specific time period. Simpson. Some of the sermons were cut from various editions of the Christian Advocate. Certificates that document Simpson's professional accomplishments are also included.
