Biographical Note

Daniel Parrish Kidder (1815-1891), American missionary and educator, was born October 18, 1815 in Darien, New York. He graduated from Wesleyan University in 1836. In 1837 he, together with his wife, Cynthia Harriet Russell, went to Brazil as missionaries. Based in Rio De Janeiro, he traveled widely in Brazil, preaching, distributing Bibles and religious tracts. As he journeyed, he observed closely the nature of the country and its institutions, both secular and religious. He was considered by all to be a fair-minded observer and one who truly loved Brazil. In 1840, his wife died, leaving him with two small children. He was forced by family needs to return to the United States. In 1842 he married Harriet Smith.

Kidder's work continued in the United States, and he was widely respected for his leadership in the growing Sunday School movement. In 1856, he became a professor of practical theology at Garrett and was later called to assume that same post at Drew Theological Seminary. He died on July 29, 1891 in Evanston, Illinois.

Scope Note

The Daniel Parrish Kidder papers represent a vast interest in Bible, theology, history, and homiletics. His career began as a missionary to Brazil, when Brazil was an Empire. The collection contains important material about those years in Brazil. Much of that material is included in a Letter Book dating from 1837. The second half of the book has an extensive index and numerous articles about Brazil and its history. Kidder's correspondence is prolific. Among a wide range of subjects there are included numerous Civil War letters particularly a number from his son, Henry, who was a Union officer. A very significant part of the collection is a series of Kidder's Daily Diaries from 1837 -1886. There are three folders of his essays and addresses, and six folders of sermons and sermon outlines. He was also the editor of the Sunday School Union. Material regarding that work is a part of the collection. Kidder's major career, however, was teaching. He served as professor of Homiletics and Practical Theology first at Garrett Biblical Institute and then at Drew Theological Seminary.
