History Note
Methodist work among Swedish sailors and immigrants began aboard the Bethelship John Wesley in New York harbor with the first sermon preached on May 25, 1845 by Olaf Gustav Hedstrom. He came from Sweden in 1825, married, was converted, joined the Methodist episcopal Church ministry in 1835 via the New York Annual Conference. His assignment to Bethelship was made because of an appeal to Methodists bu Peter Bergner, converted sailor, for aid in his work among his country persons. Hedstrom’s work expanded, and by July 7, 1845 led to organizing the Immanuel Church, Brooklyn, the first Swedish Methodist Episcopal church in the world.
Hedstrom’s younger brother, Jonas, coming from Sweden in 1833, was also converted in New York. In 1838 he was a blacksmith in Victoria, Illinois, where Swedish immigrants were sent to settle by Olaf. Jonas filled the role of minister to the group which led to the organization of Victoria Church on December 15, 1846. Jonas also started other churches in the area which included Chicago, 1852.
Churches were founded in other Midwestern states, New England, along the Pacific coast and in Texas. Greatest immigration from Sweden occurred in the 1880s. Methodist work among them increased rapidly, especially in the Chicago area. Churches were originally grouped as Swede districts in English speaking annual conferences. A 1866 convention in Chicago called for separate Swedish annual conferences along with a seminary. As a result the Northwest Swedish Annual Conference was organized in 1877 which covered all the north-central states. Rapid growth caused division by 1893 into the Central, Northern and Western annual conferences.
Eastern Swedish Annual Conference was organized in 1901 and continued to exist as its own entity until 1941 when it was absorbed back into surrounding English speaking annual conferences. The same holds true for the Pacific Coast Mission (1908-1928) and the Southern Mission in Texas (1912-1926). Both these conferences reverted back to districts before final absorption came later on. Decreased immigration, disuse of the Swedish language, and large administrative geographic areas were factors in the ultimate demises of these annual conferences. Amalgamation into English speaking annual conferences was also facilitated by the 1924 General Conference Foreign-language report along with anti-German feelings after World War 1
The Central, Northern and Western annual conferences reunited in 1928 and continued the work until their 1942 session which represented the last official meeting of all the historic Swedish speaking annual conferences.
Their work, however, was not in vain as seen by the many educational and benevolence ministries which continued after the demise of Swedish speaking annual conferences. The Swedish Theological Seminary began in Galesburg, Illinois, in 1870 and ended up in Evanston, Illinois, 1875. This building became the first structure on the future Northwestern University campus. Kendall College is another school started by the Methodist Swedes along with Texas Wesleyan College in Austin. Benevolence work could be found in the Chicago area with the Bethany Home and Hospital, Bethany Terrace and the Susanna Home for Young Women. Kansas City had the Emmanuel Home and Clay Center. New York State hosted the Bethel Home which started in Brooklyn, 1911, but moved to Ossining in 1920. Urban mission work included New York City, Chicago and Galveston. The Swedish Methodists also started their own insurance society from 1878 to 1928 with a peak of 5,400 members. Camp meetings and revivals played an important part of their religious identity as did their Book Concern which published many forms of Swedish language literature including the Sandebudet (The Messenger) being the most famous.
Scope Note
The source of the documents in this collection were gathered by Henry C. Whyman for his various historical writings on Swedish Methodism. The collection contains the beginning and later progress of Methodist work among Swedish sailors and immigrants in the United States of America. The collection contains information on the organizing of local churches, various Swedish Annual Conferences and a seminary. The collection includes records in both English and Swedish specifically about the Bethelship John Wesley in New York, the work of Olaf Gustav Hedstrom, camp meetings in Massachusetts along with vital sources about the organization and progress of the Swedish Annual Conferences and Swedish speaking local churches. Documentation includes programs, correspondence, manuscripts, resolutions, church records, minutes, protocols, ministerial examinations, miscellaneous certificates, reports, publications, periodicals, biographies and histories.
