Class tickets or membership tickets are small cards used in early Methodism in both England and America to identify members of the Methodist societies. They were first issued only to members of the Bands, but later to every acceptable member of the societies. Originally the tickets bore simply a date, a scripture text and the member’s name. Later they became a little more elaborate and included the name of the preacher or minister issuing the ticket and sometimes the name of the society or church. In England they were issued by John Wesley or one of his assistants and in America by the circuit preacher. As early as 1741 Wesley was issuing these identifying tickets, probably in his own handwriting, at Bristol. In 1820, apparently tickets were issued to attend Love Feasts as well.
A collection of class tickets from local churches in the Methodist Episcopal Church, Wesleyan Methodist Society, Primitive Methodist Church, Methodist Church and United Methodist Church.
