Abstract: | Joseph Benjamin Bethea (1932-1995), United Methodist Church Bishop, was born in Dillon, South Carolina, to the Reverend Rufus Emory and Ella Johnson Bethea. The 1988 Southeast Jurisdiction elected him bishop and then was assigned to the Columbia, South Carolina Episcopal Area. There are three group photographs related to Rockingham District, North Carolina Annual Conference events from 1877 to 1980. Reverend Joseph Benjamin Bethea is in all the photographs due to his position as District Superintendent. |

Joseph Benjamin Bethea (1932-1995), United Methodist Church Bishop, was born in Dillon, South Carolina, to the Reverend Rufus Emory and Ella Johnson Bethea. His academic education include degrees from Claflin College and Gammon Theological Seminary. The South Carolina Annual Conference of the former Methodist Church's Central Jurisdiction ordained Bethea both a deacon (1954) and elder (1956). His four pastoral appointments spanned four different annual conferences. The appointments were Walhalla and Ninety-Six Charge in South Carolina, Elkin Charge (North Carolina), St. Paul in Reidsville in (North Carolina-Virgina) and Greensboro (Western North Carolina).
In 1977, the Western North Carolina Annual Conference appointed Bethea as a District Superintendent of the Rockingham District. Bethea, in 1983, became the Administrative Assistant and Conference Coordinator of Ministerial Relations in the Raleigh Episcopal Area. Three years later Bethea became a district superintendent once more for the Raleigh District. The 1988 Southeast Jurisdiction elected him bishop and then was assigned to the Columbia, South Carolina Episcopal Area.
Bethea served the connectional church by serving on a number of boards in various leadership capacities which include Gammon Theological Seminary, Claflin College, Wesleyan College, Columbia College, General Board of Church and Society, General Commission on Religion and Race and the World Methodist Council.
Joseph Benjamin Bethea died on March 12, 1995 in Columbia, South Carolina and is buried in the Boonville First Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Boonville, North Carolina.
