History Note

The General Commission on Communication (also known as, United Methodist Cmunications) was created in 1976. It serves in meeting the communication, public relations, and promotional needs of the denomination. It is the official news- gathering and distributing agency; it develops audiovisual materials for the denomination; and oversees the development of a comprehensive communication system for the denomination. This agency is a successor to the Methodist Church's Television, Radio and Film commission, its Public Relations office and the Joint Committee on Communication.


Scope Note

This record group contains administrative records dealing with the annual meeting of the General Commission on Communications (UMCom), its predecessors, and The Interpreter magazine; biographical material on bishops and people around the denomination; selected news releases and photographs. Also included are records of the Night Call radio talk show and the Television Presence and Ministry program.

Denominational agency journals, reports and committee minutes are open to the public unless they have been closed in accordance with requirements specified in the Discipline. Denominational agency staff office records are closed for twenty-five (25) years after creation. Personnel records are closed for at least 75 years.
