217. A duly appointed minister of The United Methodist Church while serving as chaplain of any organization, institution, or military unit, or as a campus pastor, or while otherwise present where a local church is not available, may receive a person into the membership of The United Methodist Church when such person shall have confessed faith in Christ and expressed a desire to live daily life as a disciple of Jesus Christ and agreed to assume the obligations of being a faithful member of the Church. Where possible, before the vows of membership have been administered such appointed minister shall consult with the pastor of the local church of the choice of the person concerned, and upon agreement by the pastor, a statement of the vows of membership shall be issued and the pastor thereof on receiving such statement shall duly enroll that person as a member.
