John Louis Nuelsen (1867- 1946), American bishop, scholar, and ecumenist. Nuelsen was born on January 19, 1867 in Zurich, Switzerland. He went to high school and junior college in Karlruhe and Bremen, Germany, and studied at Drew University where he received his Bachelor of Divinity degree. Nuelson continued his study of theology at German Universities in Berlin and Halle. He began his minsterial work in Sedalia, Mississippi, and then taught classical languages at the Methodist College in St. Paul, Minnesota. He then taught exegetical theology for five years at Central Wesleyan College in Warrenton, Massachusetts. In 1899 he became theological professor at the Nast Theological Seminary in Berea, Ohio, where he taught German and English.
In 1908 Nuelsen was elected bishop and given episcopal supervision of the Omaha Area. He was sent to Europe in 1912 to succeed Bishop William Burt. Headquartered in Zurich, Nuelsen supervised the work of Methodism in Europe and North Africa. In 1925 he was appointed bishop of the Central European Central Conference. Nuelsen was known as a bridge builder between the two continents, was active in relief efforts during World War I, and was an accomplished scholar and author. He retired in May, 1939, ater the Uniting Conference held in Kansas City. Four years after he retired he died on June 26, 1946 in Cincinnati, Ohio.
This accession contains items related to the Nuelsen family. There are several black and white photographs, mainly unidentified. One folder contains news clippings which are very fragile. Also included are three short manuscripts written by John N. Nuelsen. All are in German. A few letters are included. The bulk of this collection contains small albums from family members.
Other members of the family that are included in the collection besides John are Henry and Emilie. The bulk of the collection, however, is on John.
