Ezekiel Cooper (1763 -1847) was born in Maryland on February 22, 1763. He was converted under the preaching of the Freeborn Garrettson. Soon after, Cooper believed he had a call to preach. Garrettson appointed him to be class leader in the Talbot Circuit in Maryland. Later, in 1784, Asbury appointed him to the Carolina circuit His traveling eventually took him from Boston to Charleston, South Carolina.
Cooper succeeded John Dickins as book steward, or publisher, in 1798, remaining in that position until 1808. He frequently became involved in church controversies. For instance, he was an advocate for the election of presiding elders and the full participation of lay delegates in the General Conference of the church.
After his service as book steward, Cooper returned to circuit preaching. He located in 1816, and in 1824 was retired by the Philadelphia Annual Conference. Cooper died on February 21, 1847.
The Ezekiel Cooper collection consists of three undated manuscript notebooks which are a compilation of sermons and sermon outlines. There are two manuscript sermons, one is an incomplete ordination sermon delivered in 1815 at the Philadelphia Conference and the second sermon was preached February 9, 1817 at Wesley Chapel, Dover, Delaware, which was published by The Reverend Daniel Fidler. There is an unused check book as well as copy of several pages from a check book dating from 1799 through 180?. Also, included are three photographs. Two are of Ezekiel Cooper and one of his nephew, Ignatious Cooper. There is a large collection of letters and notes (1799 - 1839) which include a manuscript on the subject of the Constitutional Power of the General Conference over the Episcopacy.
