Biographical Note

George Richard Crooks (1822-1897), a Methodist Episcopal pastor, educator, and writer, was born February 3 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He father was Georges Richard Crooks Sr.. He graduated from Dickinson College in 1840. After graduation he traveled the Canton, Illinois circuit but was soon recalled to Dickinson college. In the fall of 1841 he became a tutor. In 1843, he was promoted to the principal of the grammar school which he held till 1848. In 1843, he was admitted to the Philadelphia Conference. In 1846 he served as the adjunct professor of Latin and Greek at Dickinson college. In that year, he also published, A First Book in Latin with Dr. John McClintock. In June of 1846, he married Susan Frances Emory daughter of Bishop John Emery. He resigned in 1848, and served several churches in the Philadelphia Conference. In 1848, he published his second book with Dr. McClintock, A First Book in Greek . In 1857, he transferred into the New York East Conference. He also received a honorary degree from Dickinson College. In 1858, with Alexander Schem he published A New Latin English School-lexicon on the Basis of the Latin-German Lexicon of Dr. C.F. Ingerslev . He and Bishop John Hurst edited Library of Biblical and Theological Literature. In addition to his pastoral duties, in 1860 he became the editor of The Methodist and publisher a position he held for fifteen years. In 1873, he received his second honorary degree from Dickinson College. By 1876, he had written The Life and Letters of the Rev Dr. McClintock. In 1880, he join Drew Theological Seminary teaching church history. He was eventually elected to chair of historical theology a position he held until his death. In 1890, he published The Life of Bishop Simpson . He died February 20, 1897.


Scope Note

The Papers of George Crooks contains documents that span from his early college years until his death. The correspondence cover the years 1840 to 1897. Both his personal and general correspondence covers various topics. There are letters on The Methodist, various symposiums, methodology, Lay Representation, his time at Drew University and the publishing The Life of Bishop Simpson. There are letters, notes and a manuscript on his book The Life of Bishop Simpson. There are several scrapbooks covering a broad spectrum of topics including slavery, the Methodist reunion, book concerns, the Methodist press, Andover Theology and Education. There is an extensive amount of clippings on various biographies and obituaries..

This collection contained two books that were sent to the library for cataloging.
