Biographical Note

Samuel Dunn (1797-1882), English and American Minister, was born at Mevagissey, Cornwall, England on February 13, 1797 and became a Wesleyan Methodist preacher in 1816. He was the first Methodist missionary to the Shetland Isles. Dunn was a leading reformer in the 1840's, editing the Wesleyan Banner. He was expelled in 1849 because he was suspected of helping to write the Fly Sheets, which were a series of broadsides critical of the leadership of the church and especially the president of the Wesleyan Methodist Conference, Jabez Bunting. For nine years he was the pastor of a Free Methodist Church in Camborne, Cornwall. While there, he compiled a hymnal for his congregation. In 1865 he came to New York, where he became a minister in the New York East Conference. He returned to England in 1868 and served as a freelance in the Methodist churches in Cornwall. Dunn died at Hastings, England, on January 24, 1882.
