History Note

Five Point Mission in New York City - site of the former brewery - was one of the first city missions established in American Methodism. It was organized in 1844 under the auspices of the Ladies' Home Missionary Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church in New York City. The first officers of this missionary society were Mrs. E. S. Janes, called first directress; Mrs. J. A. Wright, second directress; and the Phoebe Palmer, the third such officer.

At first, the organization occupied a small room on the corner of Cross and Little Water streets, but it outgrew those quarters. The mission then purchased an old brewery at the corner of Park and Cross streets.

They bought the ground, tore down the old brewery, and erected their mission house in 1853. Not wishing to lose the drama of their action, they issued a monthly periodical, Voice From the Old Brewery. They established a large Sunday school, hired a small paid staff, and set about to help the children in their own homes and teach and guide them when they attended the various classes of the mission.

Scope Note

The Five Points Mission collection reflects the work of the church to help those in need during the second half of the nineteenth century and continuing to letter half of the twentieth century. The bulk of the material is administrative in nature. Within these administrative files are stories of adoptions and of the birth mothers who gave up their children up. Other materials record the work of the mission in baptisms, marriages, burials and subsequent wills. The more mundane issues, such as the use of the building and the everyday running of the mission, were recorded in the Administration series. The publications, The Echo and the Fair Reporter, as well as monthly reports, tap into the pulse of the mission as it tried to carry out its commission. A historical program put together by the mission in 1978 recaps the history of the mission through the media of slides, cassettes, and a script.
