Biographical Note
Thomas Marriott (1786-1852), British philanthropist, was born in Hoxton Square, London. He was the son of the Methodist philanthropist William Marriott. One of his earliest memories was that of seeing John Wesley in his coffin. Marriott married Charlotte Emelie Instell Rance in 1808. Marriott built an extensive library and Methodist memorabilia collection. Upon his death in 1852, he left 10,000 pounds to the Wesleyan Missionary Society, and the rest of his estate was used to support the Worn-Out Preachers' Fund.
