John McClintock, Jr. (1814-1870), American educator, editor and minister, was born in Philadelphia on October 27, 1814, the son of John and Martha McMackin McClintock, both born in County Tyrone, Ireland.
McClintock was educated in the Grammer School of the University of Pennsylvania. After clerking in his father's dry goods store, he became, at 16, an bookkeeper in the Methodist Book Concern in New York City. He was converted to Methodism.
After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania, he was received in 1832 on trial in the Philadelphia Conference, and was then appointed to the Methodist Episcopal Church in Jersey City, New Jersey. His health failed in 1836,and forcing him to give up the pastorate
McClintock joined the faculty of Dickinson College as a teacher of mathematics and classical languages. He was there for 12 years. With improved health he resumed preaching and was ordained an elder.
In 1848, he became editor of the Methodist. In this period he wrote several important historical and biblical works. He served as pastor of St Paul's Methodist Episcopal Church in New York City. Between 1864 and1868, as a part of the centennial celebration of American Methodism, he joined with Daniel Drew in founding the Drew Theological Seminary. In accordance with Drew's wishes, McClintock became the first president in 1867.
McClintock's first wife was Caroline Wakeman. They had one son, Emory. After Caroline's death, McClintock married Catherine Emory, the widow of his close friend, Robert Emory. McClintock died in 1870, three years after assuming the presidency of Drew.
The John McClintock collection includes correspondences, clippings, obituaries, sermons, and manuscripts. The correspondences relate to a variety of topics. The majority of the clippings are related to the books written by McClintock and Crooks on teaching Latin and Greek. The manuscript is of the first book in Latin by McClintock and Crooks in 1846.
