Biographical Note

William Xavier Ninde (1832-1901), American bishop, was born in Cortlandville (now Cortland), New York on June 1, 1832, the oldest son of the Reverend William Ward Ninde. Ninde's genealogy goes back through a succession of Methodist pastors to James Ninde, one of Wesley's preachers, who came to America to serve with Bishop Asbury.

In 1856, William Xavier Ninde joined the Black River Conference, located in northern New York. After serving several churches he became president of Garrett Biblical Institute (now Garrett-Evangelical Seminary in Evanston, Illinois). He was elected a bishop in 1884 and was assigned to Topeka, Kansas. His pastoral concern earned him the title, "the St. John of the Episcopacy." Bishop Ninde traveled widely through the church, visiting India, Japan, Korea and especially China where his daughter, Mary Ninde Gamewell, served as a missionary. Ninde's son was also a minister. Ninde died on January 3, 1901 and was buried in Detroit, Michigan.
