Abstract: John Cranville Tackaberry (1799 -1852) came to Canada from Ireland in 1817. He became a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and in 1819 he began his path to ordination, which he achieved in 1929. He was transferred to the New York Conference. After serving several churches, he died in New York City on May 9, 1852.

Biographical Note

John Cranville Tackaberry (1799-1852), a native of Ireland, emigrated to Canada in 1817. While living in Quebec, he became a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1819 he was licensed as an exhorter, and in 1821 he was licensed as a local preacher. During those years, he assisted the presiding elder of the Canada Conference.

In 1827, he was admitted on trial in the Pittsburgh Conference. The next year he was ordained by Bishop Robert Roberts, and in 1829 he was transferred to the New York Conference, where he served several appointments, including Catskill, Brooklyn, and Stratford.

In 1837, Tackaberry was assigned to the Montgomery circuit, in New York, and then for two years he was Pastor in the Harlem Mission. After an appointment to Stamford, Connecticut, his health failed and he was forced to take the superannuated relationship in the New York Conference. Tackaberry died in New York City on May 9, 1852, leaving a wife and six young children


Scope Note

This collection consists of correspondence, including a letter to Nathan Bangs dated August 16, 1833, and another letter to Adam Clarke. The correspondence dates from 1820 to 1840. In addition there are twenty-three items which include articles on the Hebrew language, numerous Biblical commentaries, sermon outlines, lists of appointments, and a unique plan for the establishment of a Christian school to train children not only on Sundays, but also through the week as well.
