John Rutherford Wright (1847-1928) was born to Martha Sterigere Taylor and Samuel De Haven Wright. He was educated at Lebanon Valley College and Drew Theological Seminary.
Wright joined the Newark Conference in 1875. In 1877 he married Ella Milligan. They went as pioneer ministers to Louisburg, Kansas. His itinerant work was interrupted by the death of his wife in childbirth. The baby also died.
Wright returned to the Newark Conference in 1879, and served several churches. In 1898, he was appointed presiding elder serving the Jersey City District. Afterwards, he returned to the pastorate.
From 1915 to 1920, he served as presiding elder for a second time. In addition to his Conference responsibilities, he spent much time in military bases in both Hoboken and Camp Merritt. Wright retired in 1921, but remained active in fund raising for the Methodist Home in Ocean Grove as well as serving as a supply pastor in Weehawken. He died in 1928. His family consisted of his second wife, Clara Lee Connett and three daughters.
The John Rutherford Wright Collection is comprised of a copy of the Constitution of the Mutual Fund Life Insurance Association of Newark Methodist Episcopal Conference 1870 and the annual Report of that body for 1904. There is also a collection of Wright's receipts representing his contributions to that Association. There is also a record of the contributions of various churches to the Methodist Episcopal Church Home for the Aged in Ocean Grove, New Jersey. The collection also includes Wright's Bible, his District Superintendent's Record Book for the Jersey City District 1920 - 1921. This Record also lists the names of officials in the local churches on that District. Finally the collection includes 22 sermon note books each including several sermons. Unfortunately, these sermons are very difficult to read because of the handwriting.
