Scope and Content Note
Benjamin Adams’ Papers date from as early as 1846 to 1902, detailing many aspects of his life as a minister and teacher, including
personal diaries to extensive sermons. The records are split into series, which include Journals, Correspondence, Manuscripts,
Writing, Sermons, Sunday School Lessons, and Biographical documents.
The Journals, dating from 1846-1902, include personal diaries which reflect his life during his distinguished career as a
minister. The diaries show personal experiences such as his early years as preacher and travels across the country. The Correspondence
series includes letters and mailings to friends and family dating from 1851-1902, some to his father or brother, all detailing
personal topics. The Manuscripts series, dating from 1867-1902 is inclusive of stories by Adams, inspired by teachings and
sermons held as a minister or experiences in travel. The Writing series, dating from 1844-1894, similar to the Manuscripts,
detail Adams’ experiences in foreign countries, such as France or Belgium. They also exhibit information on numerous topics,
such as aspects of ministry, or American life during that time. The Sermons, dating from 1875-1902, reflect Adams theological
mindset in the later years of his life. Sunday School Lessons, dating from 1879-1882, show Adams’ Bible studies. The Biographical
series, dating from 1851-1902, includes Adams’ autobiography, photographs, and various other documents detailing his life.
