Biographical Note

George Coles (1792-1858), British minister, was born in Stewkley, England on June 2, 1782. He was converted to Methodism under John Wesley's preaching. He became a local preacher at the age of 22.

Coles immigrated to America in 1818, and became a supply preacher on the Long Island circuit. The next year he became a member of the New York Conference and served several of the larger churches. Later he became assistant editor of the Christian Advocate and Journal from 1837 to 1847. He was editor of the Sunday School Advocate from 1841 to 1844.

Coles was an author of several books, including A Scripture Concordance, and Heroines of Methodism. He kept detailed journals of his activities for nearly 50 years. Coles was also an accomplished musician and writer of several hymn tunes which were used in the 1935 hymnal. Ill health curtailed his ministry and he died in 1858. He is buried in Somers, New York.

Scope Note

The Coles Papers illustrates a ministry which brought together abundant service as a pastor-preacher and as a scholar and musician. Coles' interest in Christian education flourished as editor of the Sunday School Advocate. His journals cover fifty years.
