History Note
The missionary agency underwent several name changes and re- organizations from its
creation in 1846, but finally settled on Board of Missions around 1910. The material
in this sub-series represents the foreign missionary concerns of the Board.
Scope Note
The missionary files series is composed of correspondence from missionaries in the
field to the Board of Missions and correspondence from the Board to its
missionaries. The file may also contain reference material about missionaries, or
about mission stations or conferences. The filling arrangements reflect different
systems used at the Board over periods of time. No attempt has been made to alter or
restructure the original filing system. some of the file in this series are arranged
by geographic area, or mission conference and then alphabetically by missionary's
last name. Some of the files in this series are arranged alphabetically by
missioanry's last name and there may be no direct reference to the geographic area
served by the missionary.
Arrangement
Materials have been arranged in the following manner.
The records are arranged into two series. The first is missionary correspondence from
the field to the Board staff. The second series is correspondence from the Board
staff to the missionaries and to others involved in the administration of the
mission program.
The missionary correspondence material is arranged alphabetically. Country, nation,
or region of missionary activity is noted to the right of the missionary's name. The
references to the U. S. are mainly concerning retired missionaries. The regions
represented are: Africa, Argentina, Belgium, Brazil , China, Cuba, Czechoslovakia,
Europe, France, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Poland, U.S.A. There is a geographic index at
the back of this guide. Most of the material concerns missionary work in China,
Brazil, Cuba and Africa.
The board correspondence material has been kept i its original letterpress book
order. The volumes were organized by years. Each volume had an index which showed
where a particular person's letters where located.

When citing material from this collection please use the following format: Direct
reference to the item or its file folder, Missionary Files (Microfilm Edition),
United Methodist Church Archives - GCAH, Madison, New Jersey. Do not make use of the
items' call number as that is not a stable descriptor.
Access Restrictions
Denominational agency journals, reports and committee minutes are open to the pubilc
unless they have been closed in accordance with requirements specified in the
Discipline. Denominational agency staff office records are closed for twenty- five
(25) years after creation. Personnel records are closed for at least 75 years.
Appeals can be made to the General Commission on Archives and History, P. O. Box
127, Madison, NJ 07940.
