John McLaughlin (1823-1857), Methodist Episcopal Church minister, was born in the North of Ireland in November, 1823. At seven years of age he came to Quebec, Canada, with his family. In 1831, McLaughlin moved to the United States in order to study for the ministry at Newbury, Vermont and finishing his studies at M.E.B. Institute in 1851. McLaughlin became a member of the Vermont Annual Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1847. In 1849, he transferred to the New Hampshire Annual Conference, was ordained a deacon, and stationed in Goffstown. By 1851, he became an elder in full connection. During the interim period between his deacon and elder ordinations he was appointed to the Chestnut Street church in Nashua. Later pastoral appointments included: Claremont (1852-1853), Garden Street in Lawrence (1854-1855), and Main Street, Great Falls (1856). With his health deteriorating, McLaughlin superannuated in 1857 and moved to Charlestown, South Carolina. He died on December 20, 1857.
