Biographical Note

Charles Newell Cobb (1855-?), American educator and book salesman, was born to the Reverend William Newell Cobb and Harriet Eliza Goss Cobb. He attended Cazenovia Seminary in upstate New York, then called the Central New York Conference Seminary, and furthered his studies at Syracuse University, where he demonstrated an interest in the natural sciences and mathematics. After his graduation from the university, Cobb traveled to Europe, where he studied German and French. Upon his return, worked as a private tutor and a traveling book salesman for the Methodist Episcopal Church. On July 15, 1878, his father died. His mother died April 28, 1916. Charles' death date is unknown.

Scope Note

This collection contains correspondence to and from Charles Newell Cobb, along with one letter from his father, the Reverend William Newell Cobb, a few months before his death in 1878. Charles's involvement in the Methodist Episcopal Church is indicated by the considerable amount of correspondence between ministers and invoices from Thos. W. Durston and Co., a noted depository of the Methodist Book Concern, with which he was affiliated. Also present are letters from his mother, Harriet Eliza Goss Cobb, written on mourning stationary a year and a half after the death of William. In addition to family correspondence, there is a photograph of Charles from his early twenties, along with statements and bills.
