History Note

The United Brethren in Christ Church General Conference of 1885 appointed a Church Commission on the Confession of Faith and Constitution to update their 1841constitution, a rule for lay membership in the General Conference, a rule on secret societies, and a new confession of faith.

The commission presented its report to the 1889 General Conference, which adopted it on May 11. On May 31, the Bishops read a proclamation placing the Church under the new constitution. A small minority, led by Bishop Milton Wright, walked out of the Conference and formed its own General Conference.

Wright's followers claimed to hold to the original intent of the constitution of 1841, especially in reference to its opposition to secret societies. Although they claimed to be the true Church of the United Brethren in Christ, they added the "Old Constitution" to its name.

On July 26, 1889, Bishop Milton Wright filed a suit before the Court of Common Pleas in Montgomery County, Ohio for the possession of the printing establishment. On December 4, 1890, the Court denied his claim. The case was appealed several times, and was eventually settled in favor of the defendants by the United States Court of Appeals. There were also law suits in several states over local church property. In every state but Michigan the plaintiff's case was denied, and the Michigan decision was later reversed on appeal. The courts also ruled that the plaintiffs take a new name. The plaintiff's called themselves the Church of the United Brethren in Christ (Old Constitution). The original group retained the name of the Church of the United Brethren in Christ.
