History Note
The Commission to Study and Recommend Action Concerning the Jurisdictional System was created by the General Conference of 1956, composed of seventy members from all six jurisdictions, and assigned the following responsibility and authority: to make a thorough study of the jurisdictional system, with special reference to its philosophy, its effectiveness, its weaknesses, and its relationship to the future of the Methodist Church; and, to carry on studies and conduct hearings in all the jurisdictions on racial segregation in the Methodist Church, and other problems related to the jurisdictional system. Finally, the commission was to develop courses of action directed toward greater interracial brotherhood and the spirit of Christian love.
Scope Note
Contains the final report of the Commission, minutes from various jurisdictional hearing sessions, various resources used by the Commission, correspondence, news releases, resolutions and personal statements made before and by the Commission.

Access Restrictions
Denominational
agency journals, reports and committee minutes are open to the public unless they have been
closed in accordance with requirements specified in the Discipline. Denominational agency staff
office records are closed for twenty-five (25) years after creation. Personnel records are
closed for at least 75 years. Appeals can be made to the General Commission on Archives and
History, P. O. Box 127, Madison, NJ 07940.

limited in certain instances. Before using any material for publication from this collection a
