Samuel Romilly Hall (1812 - 1876), a British Methodist preacher, was born in Bristol, England. A memorial for Hall in the Wesleyan Methodist Church Conference Minutes for 1876 records "Having given himself to the Methodist ministry, he studied the records of its rise and progress." Hall was an author whose lectures reflected his interest in a defense of John Wesley and modern Methodism as well as a lecture on the subject of John Wesley's use of the Press. Hall was widely known for his friendship and generosity among his peers. In 1868 he was elected the President of the Methodist Conference. His last Circuit was Penzance. In the last four years of his ministry he was stricken by paralysis which limited his work.
The Hall collection comprises a Scrapbook which represents Hall's service on the Windsor Circuit 1837; the Hull Circuit 1838; the Serenoa Circuit 1840 and 1841; the Fourth London Circuit 1842, 1843, 1844; the Seventh London Circuit 1845, 1846. and 1847. There are photographs and letters from several preachers who served with Hall on those Circuits. There are also clippings and photographs of churches, schools, and public buildings associated with these Circuits. There are also three letters from Hall dated 1854, 1862, and 1869 as well as a photograph of Samuel R. Hall.
