Biographical Note

Adam Young Graham (1831-1905), American Minister, was born on April 5, 1831 in Westmoreland County, Virginia.

Graham joined the Church of the United Brethren in Christ in his youth and was licensed to preach for the denomination on November 6, 1852. His tenure with the United Brethren was for a short period of time, and Graham transferred his membership and credentials to the Methodist Episcopal Church on July 12, 1856. This took place at the Highland Circuit quarterly conference, which was part of the Baltimore Annual Conference. In 1859, Graham began his studies at Garrett Biblical Institute. He graduated in 1861.

After graduation, on December 3, 1861, he married Martha L. Drake of Chicago. They had four children. The Michigan Annual Conference ordained Graham both a deacon (1859) and elder (1863). During his active ministry, Graham served churches in Maryland (1856, 1858), Virginia (1857), Michigan (1862-1870), Missouri (1871-1875) and Illinois (1876-1882). In 1883, because his voice was failing, Graham took a superannuate's relation and moved to Westfield, Illinois, where he spent the rest of life. Graham died on August 3, 1905 and was buried in the Maple Hill Cemetery.

Scope Note

Adam Graham' records reflect his ministry while serving churches in Michigan and Missouri. The bulk of the records are sermons, seventy-nine of them. Six are in shorthand. Sermon structure includes the Biblical text, numbered order of sermons (12-162), date (1862-1875), manuscript text and an outline on the back of most sermons.

These sermons are spiritual in nature and often lack information on contemporary events, such as the American Civil War. Primary topics are Christian living, histories of the ancient world and the church, doctrine, missions and its ongoing financial support as well as Sunday schools. It should be noted that some of the sermons are fragments only. There are two letters, dated 1861, written to a friend named Pattie dealing with affairs of acquaintances who Graham met while attending Garrett Biblical Institute. Within the collection there are seven manuscripts of various lengths. Topics include a reminiscence about Graham's life as a young minister with the Baltimore Conference, illustrating how the Methodist Episcopal Church moved to a more subdued service in later years.

Other topics include reflections on church history, moral issues and a Christmas speech of December 27, 1867 dealing with the subject of Santa Claus.
