Abstract: | James Wright (1838-?), Methodist layperson, was born on August 17, 1838. His earliest profession was that of school teacher until 1862 when he became a bookkeeper for Barton and Sheldon. Record types includes journals (1858-1867), account book (1940-1943), ribbon, signatures, church members list, election tallies (1861), a letter, and other ephemera. The journals make remarks on the American Civil War and sermons that Wright listened to. This collection consists of the personal journals of James Wright from 1856-1863, and 1867, along with an account book of Dr. Justus Wright from 1938-1943. |

James Wright (1838-?), Methodist layperson, was born on August 17, 1838. His earliest profession was that of school teacher until 1862 when he became a bookkeeper for Barton and Sheldon. The firm was located in the West Washington Market which is in New York City. Wright did not enlist in the American Civil War due to a physical condition. By 1867, he married a woman named Helen and they had a baby boy in that same year. Wright almost daily attended either Methodist or Quaker meetings near his home.
Record types includes journals (1858-1867), account book (1940-1943), ribbon, signatures, church members list, election tallies (1861), a letter, and other ephemera. The journals make remarks on the American Civil War and sermons that Wright listened to. Journals contain a detailed account of a surgery peformed in an Albany Medical School, on Wright, in the Fall of 1861 along with medical treatments for a chronically infected leg. They also contain an account, as a city resident, of the July, 1863 New York Draft Riots and the racial violence related to them. Wright served as secretary of the New York City Sunday School and Missionary Society.
