Abstract: Vernon Lee Schmid (1934- ), American minister and writer, was born in Parsons, Kansas in 1934. He is a prolific author whose specialty is poetry on subjects that range from peace to spirituality. The collection contains various publications of Schmid's poetry as well as a news release.

Biographical Note

Vernon Lee Schmid (1934- ), American minister and writer, was born in Parsons, Kansas in 1934. Schmid spent his early life on farms and attended one room country schools through the eight grade. He attended highschool in Colorado and Kansas before leaving school to join the U.S. Army during the Korean Police Action serving as a military policeman. He has been a wrangler and trail guide, rough stock rodeo competitor, rock-a-billy singer and bandleader, community theater director, horse trainer and riding instructor, newspaper reporter and editor, radio newscaster, disc jockey and college professor. He entering the United Methodist ministry in 1972 and served rural, suburban and urban churches, as well as a university campus minister and denominational executive before retiring. Schmid was ordained by the United Methodist Church in 1974.

Educated at Labette Community College(A.A.), Pittsburg State University, University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, Blackstone School of Law (J.D.), Saint Paul School of Theology (M.Div.), Mansfield College of Oxford University, the Jesuit Center for Spiritual Growth, and the Graduate Theological Foundation (D.Min), he has taught at Penn Valley Community College, Kansas City, Missouri; Chesapeake College, Wye Mills, Maryland; Cecil College, North East Maryland; and Fort Lewis College, Durango, Colorado.

Recipient of a Writers Digest Poetry Prize, Kansas East Conference World Peace Award, Associated Church Press Award for editorship United Methodist Reporter for Eastern Pennsylvania, Allen Ginsberg National Poetry Competition Honorable Mention, Peninsula Conference Commission on Religion and Race Lowan S. Pitts Award for Contribution to Race Relations in Community, Peninsula-Delaware Conference Commission on Christian Unity and Interreligious Concern Award and a Northwoods Press Poetry Prize, he is a prolific writer.
