Abstract: The Methodist Episcopal Church, South, made it a top priority to have an authorized hymnal immediately after its split with the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1844. The General Conference of 1866 requested the publishers create a smaller hymnal than its predecessors by only including eight hundred songs. What was to become the 1889 Hymnal was modeled after the Methodist Episcopal Church’s 1878 hymnal. The final result became the last official hymnal produced by the Southern Methodists before the issuing of the joint 1905 Hymnal with the Methodist Episcopal Church. A scrapbook which contains the Committee's editorial notes and decisions for the Southern Methodist 1889 Hymnal.

History Note

The Methodist Episcopal Church, South, made it a top priority to have an authorized hymnal immediately after its split with the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1844. During the course of their history, the denominations had a total of six revisions with 1874 seeing two-separate publications for different user settings. The General Conference of 1866 requested the publishers create a smaller hymnal than its predecessors by only including eight hundred songs. What was to become the 1889 Hymnal was modeled after the Methodist Episcopal Church’s 1878 hymnal. The final result became the last official hymnal produced by the Southern Methodists before the issuing of the joint 1905 Hymnal with the Methodist Episcopal Church.
