Abstract: Dennis R. Fletcher was a United Methodist minister. His ministry began in 1934 in the former Delaware Annual Conference, with more than six years devoted to the active local pastorate. Fletcher's connectional services spanned the global church as he worked for 27 years with the Board of Missions, Section of Church Extension and 3.5 years as the Executive Director of Gulfiside United Methodist Assembly in Mississippi. Fletcher was a forerunner in the number of African Americans holding posts at the general level of the church. He helped lay the groundwork for the dismantling of the Central Jurisdiction and creation of a more inclusive church. His papers include sermons, photographs and biographical information.

Biographical Note

Dennis R. Fletcher (1909-2001), United Methodist minister, was born on April 29, 1909 in Withams, Virginia. He was one of seven children bon to Levi and Clarissa Tunnell fletcher. His early education came within the public schools of Jenkins Bridge, Virginia and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Fletcher was awarded a bachelors degree from Lincoln University (Pennsylvania). He also completed special studies at the Boston School of Theology and Garrett School of Theology, Rust College awarded him the Doctor of Divinity degree.

Fletcher was known as a strong religious leader in the local church and church-wide community. His ministry began in 1934 in the former Delaware Annual Conference, with more than six years devoted to the active local pastorate. His assignments included Spring Lake, New Jersey (student appointment), Centerville Circuit, Maryland (1 year). In addition to this time served in the Delaware Conference, he was pastor of Peniel and Bethsaida, Philadelpha (9 years), and St. Mark in Montclair, New Jersey (5 years), the church from which he retired at the Northern New Jersey Cconference i 1979. Even into retirement he provided leadership as interim pastor of Galilee (15 months), and Trinity (8 months) in New Jersey. Fletcher's connectional services spanned the global church as he worked for 27 years with the Board of Missions, Section of Church Extension and 3.5 years as the Executive Director of Gulfiside United Methodist Assembly in Mississippi.

Fletcher was a forerunner in the number of African Americans holding posts at the general level of the church. As a member of the Inter-Jurisdictional Committee, Commission on Religion and Race, and teh Board of Laity he provided leadership. He helped lay the groundwork for the dismantling of the Central Jurisdiction and creation of a more inclusive church. Up until his death, Fletcher spent time involved church ministry and community activities as is evident through his membership with the NAACP, Black Methodists for Church Renewal, and Black United Fund of New Jersey.


Scope Note

Material contains sermons, photographs, artifacts and biograhical information. The sermons are undated and comprise the majority of the papers. The photographs are local church and community related.
