Abstract: William Irvin Hughes was born in 1871 and died in 1949. Hughes conducted his work in the Methodist Church as well as the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. He was a preacher for Western North Carolina and known to be the last circuit rider. Materials in the collection reflect his ministry.

Biographical Note

William Irvin Hughes (1871-1949), American Minister, was born in Cocke County, Tennesee on April 28, 1871. In 1883 he moved to Cullowhee, North Carolina and attended high school, there. Hughes became licensed to preach by quarterly conference in 1894. He also received certification for deaconship in 1899 in the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. He joined the Western North Carolina conference of the Methodist Church in 1909. On September 6, 1910 Hughes married Anna Dowdle. He is known to be the last of the circuit riders. As a circuit rider he conducted most of his ministry in Western North Carolina's mountains. In 1929, Hughes retired and moved to Rutherford College. During retirement, Hughes taught Men's bible class at Abernethy Memorial Methodist Church. He also prompted his people to rebuild his home church. He died on January 2, 1949. He was buried in Hickory, Catawba, North Carolina.


Scope and Content Note

Folder content consists heavily of hand-written notes, most likely for sermons in his travels as a circuit rider. Notes also regard dedication for Hughes' home church. Content also includes photographs of Hughes as well as a letter signifying his license for preaching. Certifications for deacon, preaching and church membership as well as copies of church minutes from the Western North Carolina conference for the Methodist Episcopal Church South, are also included.
