Biographical Note

Eugene Lewis Smith (1912-1986), a leader in world mission and ecumenical affairs, was elected general secretary of the Division of World Missions at the Methodist Church's Board of Missions in 1949. He continued in that post until the World Council of Churches asked him to direct its New York office in 1964, a position he held for nine years.

Smith held pastorates in New York and New Jersey before taking the denominational post. Smith ended his professional career in the local church in 1977.

Smith was a native of Iowa. He was educated at Willamette University in Salem, Oregon; Drew University in Madison, New Jersey, and New York University, where he received his Ph.D. He was the author of The Power Within Us, They Gird the Earth for Christ, God's Mission and Ours, and Mandate for Mission.

Scope Note

Material in the Smith Papers reflects all major phases of Smith's career. The majority of the collection is made up of addresses, speeches, sermons, and drafts of essays and articles from his early pastorates to his retirement. Most of the correspondence in the collection is personal. A few exchanges of correspondence from 1973- 1976 refer to the end of his position at the World Council of Churches in 1973. Smith wrote and spoke often on the topic of the Holy Spirit. An entire series containing drafts of published work, addresses and speeches, research notes, and copies of published work is devoted to the subject. Another topical series is centered on Smith's concern for ecumenical discussion with groups he referred to as "conservative Evangelicals." Record types in this series include meeting and conference reports and minutes, addresses and speeches, and drafts of publications.
