Abstract: | Jacob Hartzler (1833-1915) was licensed to preach with the Evangelical Association, Central Pennsylvania Conference, in 1856. Later he became a missionary to Japan and was instrumental in translating the Old Testament into Japanese. In the split of the Evangelical Association Hartzler moved with the United Evangelical Church and became an elder in 1894. Hartzler was superannuated in 1911 and died at York, Pennsylvania, 1915. |

Jacob Hartzler (1833- 1915) was licensed to preach with the Evangelical Association, Central Pennsylvania Conference, in 1856. He served several pastoral assignments before his assignment as editor of the Evangelical Messenger in 1870. In 1880 he moved to Japan where he learned Japanese and was assigned to the Bible Translating Committee. In 1886 he was elected president of the Japanese branch of the Evangelical Alliance, and in 1887 he served as pastor of the Union Church in Tokyo. In the split of the Evangelical Association Hartzler moved with the United Evangelical Church and became an elder in 1894. Hartzler was superannuated in 1911 and died at York, Pennsylvania, 1915. This collection contains material from Hartzler's years in Japan. Included are sermons and sermon notes, a journal of sermons, speeches, and cultural/social/historical observations of Japan, a handwritten book in Japanese script with drawings, and two ledgers used for translation notes. Some of the sermon notes were found in Broadus " Commentary on Matthew," which was in Hartzler's library. There is an oversized photograph which includes Hartzler, his wife and Japanese women.

There are few dates in the materials, so the collection is arranged only by material type. Some of the sermons are in Japanese, some in English, and the sermon notes are in English. The authorship of the handwritten book is unknown.
