Luke Tyerman (1820-1889), British Wesleyan Methodist, was born on February 26, 1820, at Osmotherley, near Thirsk, Yorkshire. Tyerman entered the ministry in 1844. His preaching was decidedly anti-Roman Catholic. By 1864, bad health forced him from the active ministry whereupon he turned his focus to study Methodist history. H. Morley Rattenbury, in his article on Tyerman in the Encyclopedia of World Methodism, sums up his scholarship by noting, “Although much had been written about eighteenth-century Methodism before his time, Tyerman was the first historian to produce serious, scholarly biographies of John Wesley, George Whitefield, and John Fletcher . . . His publications included Life and Times of the Reverend Samuel Wesley, Life and Times of the Reverend John Wesley, The Oxford Methodists, Life of George Whitefield and Wesley’s Designated Successor.” Tyerman died in March 1889.
The bulk of the Tyerman collection is made up of seven bound, handwritten manuscripts on the lives of John and Samuel Wesley. There are six large volumes that make up the John Wesley biography and one large volume for Samuel Wesley. A note in the first John Wesley volume states that the manuscript has double the information than the printed set. Tyerman’s correspondence and a clipping make up the last folder in the collection.
