Abstract: Gertrude A. Vanderbeck (1882-1977), Methodist business woman, was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 1882, to Thomas and Harriett Vanderbeck. Gertrude became a successful business woman while working for a New York City law firm. She became active in Madison Avenue, St. James and Christ Church Methodist churches. Vanderbeck’s papers primarily focus on her immediate family which includes her father and brother. Two historical gems can be found with the correspondence where her father, Thomas, writes about the United States participation in the Spanish-American War.

Biographical Note

Gertrude A. Vanderbeck (1882-1977), Methodist business woman, was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 1882, to Thomas and Harriett Vanderbeck. Gertrude never married but remained close to her brother Frank. At some point in her life there was a move to New York City where she would spend most of her adult years. Gertrude became a successful business woman while working for a New York City law firm. There were a few business related organizations focused on women that Vanderbeck chaired. Religion was a major component of her life. She became active in Madison Avenue, St. James and Christ Church Methodist churches. Gertrude died on August 16, 1977 and buried in Philadelphia.


Scope Note

Vanderbeck’s papers primarily focus on her immediate family which includes her father and brother. Photographs and travel postcards make up the bulk of the records. Some of the photographs document her church participation and vacations with family and friends. Other photographs, along with letters and certificates, represent various life milestones of her family’s history. Two historical gems can be found with the correspondence where her father, Thomas, writes about the United States participation in the Spanish-American War.
