Abstract: Richard Wheatley (1831-1909), Methodist Episcopal Church minister, spent many of his years actively involved in the New York Conference. This collection contains an incomplete, handwritten version of one of the books that he authored � The Centennial History of the New York Conference.

Biographical Note

Richard Wheatley (1831- 1909), Methodist Episcopal Church minister, spent many of his years actively involved in the New York Annual Conference. He was born near York, England, on July 14, 1831. He began his work in the New York Annual Conference in 1854 and continued to be actively involved until his death. He married Laura, daughter of John Hawk, of Hancock, New York, on May 8, 1858. In 1899, he was designated Conference historian and held this position until 1906. Wheatley made many contributions to literary publications. He published The Life and Letters of Mrs. Phoebe Palmer, The Biographic Encyclopedia of the New England States in the Nineteenth Century, a History of the World from the Creation to the Close of the Middle Ages, and Cathedrals and Abbeys in Great Britain. He was also the author of The Centennial History of the New York Conference and A History of the Churches Composing the New York Conference. He died on June 10, 1909, in Cold Spring, New York.


Scope Note

This collection contains an incomplete, handwritten version one of the books that Reverend Wheatley authored - The Centennial History of the New York Conference. This material normal contains four volumes. Though this version is missing the second volume, the collection does contain the first, third, and fourth volumes.
