Joseph Hartwell (1816-1899), American minister, was born in Summit, New York, September 22, 1816. He was licensed to exhort at age 16 and to preach at age 18.
Hartwell joined the Oneida Annual Conference in 1838. After serving several appointments, he was appointed presiding elder (district superintendent) of the Auburn District in 1852.
Some time in 1853 Hartwell became the financial secretary of Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. In 1855 he organized the Northwestern Church Extension Society based in Chicago. He served as the society's financial secretary and field agent. The purpose of the Society was to provide low interest loans to help build Methodist churches and parsonages. While the Society would raise the funds, the loans were actually distributed through the annual conference. He traveled around the Midwest, organizing church extension societies in nearly all the Conferences related to the Chicago Church Extension Society.
Through this ministry Hartwell raised thousands of dollars, secured donations of land for parsonages and church buildings. He prepared the way for the organization of the General Society of Church Extension which occurred at the General Conference of 1864. He was married twice, first to Sarah A. Peacock, and second to Sarah A. Rood. Hartwell died in Binghamton, New York on November 13, 1899.
This collection consists of four personal Diaries for 1854, 1855, 1856, and 1857. These diaries reflect Hartwell's extensive travel in the cause of Church Extension.
There is an extensive and varied scrapbook covering the major part of his ministerial life. The first two pages give a brief history of the founding of the Northwestern Church Extension Society and the constitution of that organization. In addition, there is a hand-written constitution of the Southeastern Church Extension of the Methodist Episcopal Church. There is also a newsclipping of the Wisconsin Conference Church Extension Society, which is noted as the first such report ever given in the Church to any of its Conferences. It was given September 6, 1855. The scrapbook contains a limited number of letters from persons who were involved with Church Extension, namely, A.D. Field, A. J. Kynett, J. S. David, L. L. Keen, J. M. Buckley, Bishop Edward Ames, and Bishop Matthew Simpson. The correspondence with Simpson pertains to Hartwell's interest in gaining support for Church Extension by the general church. The scrapbook has a large collection of articles from the Northwestern Christian Advocate written by Hartwell on a variety topics. There is an article in the Northern Christian Advocate, May 9, 1900, The Beginnings of Church Extension in the Methodist Episcopal Church by Addison Wilbur Hayes which includes a photo of Joseph Hartwell.
