Abstract: Thomas MacFarlan (?-1866), Methodist Episcopal Church Local Methodist Preacher and business man, lived and worked in the New York City area. He was elected President of the Local Preacher’s Society in 1857. The diary is a day to day account of a man whose deep spirituality informed his faith and business practices.

Biographical Note

Thomas MacFarlan (?-1866), Methodist Episcopal Church Local Methodist Preacher and business man, lived and worked in the New York City area. He was elected President of the Local Preacher’s Society in1857. MacFarlan often worked with ministries outside of his local church on both sides of the ethnic divide. These ministries included Chaplain of the Colored Home on 65th Street near 2nd Avenue and the Association for the Benefit of Colored Orphans. Because of his success in business, MacFarlan served on the New York City’s Commissioner of Deeds and a Notary of the Public. It was during this time he helped to manage the Stuyvesant family estate.


Scope Note

The 1857 diary is a day to day account of a man whose deep spirituality informed his faith and business practices. Set in the Great Panic of the same year, we see how MacFarlan continued his robust practice of visitations and preaching while his business began to have one reversal after another. The diary illuminates his important status within the New York City business sector with frequent visitors of national and area renown. There are some glimpses into his family life, especially his relationship with the sons as they try to find their way in the world of commerce.
